Johnny Depp stars as Whitey Bulger in the new gangster movie Black Mass. A lot of people will object to this movie because Whitey Bulger is widely considered a snitch and government informant despite his fame in the underworld as a legendary gangster. But at the end of the day its just entertainment. Not everyone can uphold the death before dishonor code and even though Whitey was an advocate for it he was a fraud because the whole time he was preaching Omertà he was snitching to the feds. It is what it is. Still I believe the movie is worth checking out.
From the trailer it looks bad ass. Johnny Depp might be giving the performance of his life. Good gangster flicks are few and far between so until this film is released and everyone sees it the verdict is still out. Can it rank up there with Scarface, The King of New York, The Godfather movies and Goodfellas or will it fall by the wayside and be just another movie with a lot of hype and hot air but no substance? We will see. And the truth of the matter is that a lot of the good gangster flicks center around snitches- American Gangster, Paid in Full, New Jack City, Blow, the aforementioned Goodfellas. Thats just how it is and what Hollywood caters too. But with all due respect to the men and women who took the code to their grave its just entertainment at the end of the day.
