Apple Watch Malfunctions On Tattoos

The recent release of the Apple Watch was met with as much fervor as any other time Apple drops a new product. About a million Apple fans went out and copped their Apple Watch to satisfy their lust for technology or “keep up with the Joneses.” Like any technology, the Apple Watch is susceptible to flaws. Unfortunately, if you have tattoos on your wrists, the Apple Watch may not be compatible with you.

A number of tatted customers who purchased the Apple Watch complained about it not functioning properly on their wrists. This is due to the way that the Apple Watch operates. Your heart rate determines whether it is powered on or off, which it can’t do through tattoos. CNN reports:

The issue stems from the way that the Apple Watch senses your heartbeat. According to Apple, the back of the Watch rapidly flashes green and infrared light at your skin, which gets absorbed or reflected by your red blood. When your heart beats, there is more blood in your wrist, and there is less blood between beats. By sensing the timing between your heartbeats, the Apple Watch can calculate your heart rate.

As it turns out, solid color tattoos (especially red) also absorb the green light and reflect the red, while black absorbs both color of lights. The ink is opaque, meaning it prevents outside light from penetrating your skin. Skin color should not effect the performance of your Apple Watch. Scars and abrasions on the skin should not have any adverse effect either.
