Though ousted by Peru, in recent years, as “Cocaine Capitol of the World,” Colombia is still buzzing on the underground drug market in a big way. This means that violence still runs rampant in the nation, claiming bodies over millions and billions of dollars. One of the major culprits in Colombia, believed to be behind 117 murders, was John Alexander Calderon Vidal, a.k.a. “Largo” (translates to “Large”). Now, the reputed gang leader has been taken into custody by Colombian authorities and is expected to be charged with homicide, blackmail and weapons trafficking.
For a little background on Largo, the Daily Mail reports:
According to official sources, Largo was also a member of a gang called Los Rastrojos, which was under the control of drug lord Wilber Varela, alias Jabon.
After that gang was disbanded, Largo joined another gang led by a man nicknamed Seco. Then he decided to leave the gang following a power struggle with the leader and set up his own outfit, which was involved in drug trafficking and homicide, according to reports.
Largo is suspected of being behind two high profile murders. One he’s accused of orchestrating is that Army Officer Nicolas Alberto Brito, whose body was found dismembered after disappearing in 2011. The other is the murder of Gaby Diaz in the city of Baranquilla. Diaz was the leader of the La 40 gang.
Largo was arrested after a yearlong investigation into his activities.
