Technology has made our life simpler and more comfortable but it affected interpersonal relationships. Living in an era of unlimited online communication, dating apps, messengers, open information, people are supposed to have no problems with establishing bonds and developing romantic relationships. However, too much of a good thing… The abundance of possibilities simply overwhelms young people. The illusion that there is always plenty of fish in the sea has made millennials picky and selfish. There a lot of factors that influence the attitude of young people to love and romantic relationships. Each generation faces certain challenges. What stands in the way of millennials to a successful long-term relationship? Guys behind one older men dating site decided to find out.

Divergent goals of partners

It’s true that millennials have more opportunities that their parents and grandparents. They feel freer and more independent in their choices. Today, priorities have changed. Self-development, career, following your dreams – all this is more important than having the goal to settle down and start a family. Moreover, it’s not necessary to get married to a person you love. Most young people have fleeting relationships and don’t want to make a commitment until they turn 30. That range of opportunities is great for an individual, not for a couple. Partners may have different priorities in life – one of them may want to volunteer in India, and the other one may dream about making business in Hong Kong.

Jealousy on the Internet

There is a special term for a light form of cheating that consists in liking someone’s photos and writing compliments under someone’s posts other than your partner’s. It’s called micro-cheating. Your partner doesn’t know that person in real life but you feel jealous of him or her as if you caught them flat-footed in your bedroom. Millennials have two lives: real and digital. Previous generations didn’t have such divarication. Contemporary young people have two images, and they often don’t coincide.

Showing off personal life

Nowadays, we tend to expose our personal lives to a wide audience through social media. It has become customary to share memorable moments and even unpleasant ones that happen within a couple on social networking sites. People of the previous generations used to meet with their family or friends and discuss some troubles happening in their relationships. But it was behind the closed door and in secret from the partner. Today, photos on Instagram with some frank entries, such as “our first fight” or “make-up bouquet”, are available to hundreds of people, which actually kills intimacy.

Poor face to face communication

This is a real issue not only in terms of communication between romantic partners but interpersonal communication in general. The habit of checking out a phone and scrolling through feed for the sake of scrolling is very annoying and abusive, especially if you are on a date and this is what your companion does instead of looking you in the eyes.

Misunderstanding

Since millennials communicate mainly through texting, it causes many cases of misunderstanding. Words and emojis can’t translate everything properly. And young people resort to texting even when they need to discuss an important issue or solve a conflict. A typo or too many exclamation marks can only aggravate the conflict. Of course, it’s easy to text some unpleasant news, but the thing is difficult conversations should take place face to face.

Now that you know the major issues that modern relationships face, you can work on their elimination.
