The Covid-19 pandemic has had many devastating consequences around the world. Even if you have not been directly affected by the virus, the last few months in quarantine have significantly impacted the mental wellbeing of many as we have remained indoors to stop the spread of the disease. This has also meant that many have had to make a change to their ordinary workout routine, either drastically reducing it, or stopping it entirely.

With studies showing that exercise is key to improving mental and physical health, working out is an essential part of getting through this period of instability. It can be, of course, intimidating to get back into a workout routine when you’ve taken time off. Here are some of the ways that you can slowly get back into fitness after Covid-19.

1. Invest in new sports gear

Anyone who has experienced a lapse in their regular workout routine will know that one of the best ways to motivate yourself to work out again is investing in new sportswear. Not only will new workout clothes give you more confidence, but new equipment will mean that your gameplay will be of a higher standard and, as a result, more rewarding.

Take time to research specialist gear like running trainers, and use discount codes like Dicks coupons to save money on the right sporting goods. You don’t have to burn a hole in your wallet to buy high-quality products from leading brands.

2. Start small

After so much time off, be careful of adopting an “all or nothing” attitude with getting back into fitness. If you push your body too far too soon, it could result in a serious injury. Try a fitness program that eases you back in slowly but is still strict enough to motivate you to keep going.

“Couch to 5K” is a free program that is extremely approachable and great for building up endurance after a long period away. Equally, there are plenty of low-impact HIIT workouts for beginners. If you want to stay indoors, consider investing in a treadmill or stationary bike, which will allow you to complete light cardiovascular workouts while you build up your stamina.

3. Try running to build up your fitness

Many have taken up running during quarantine as a way to keep fit under lockdown. There are many benefits of this form of exercise, in particular, building up your level of cardiovascular fitness. Moreover, running can be social and allows you to safely meet with friends in an outdoor space, and requires no equipment nor payment fee.

4. Try something new

Trying a different kind of exercise is another excellent way to get back into fitness. By reviving your workout routine, it will be easier to keep engaged with the workout and to motivate you to exercise when you are feeling low.

If you want to stick with what you’re already good at, try challenging yourself to beat your personal best. On top of this, there are also many 7-day, 10-day, or 30-day challenges available that incorporate your fitness strengths but encourage you to go further.
