While police killings of unarmed men is the hot topic right now, flying under the radar is police officers’ abuse of women. Some officers use their power and authority to rape women, forcing them into sexual acts against their will to satisfy sexual urges. In 1999, a police officer in Glynn County, GA, Dennis Krauss was one of these police officers, but the state of Georgia believes that he deserves reprieve regardless of the heinous crime he committed.
Krauss responded to a woman’s distress call in Georgia, claiming she’d been hit by her husband. This woman did not know she was only bringing about her own rape as she called for help from law enforcement. Instead of arresting the husband, he offered the woman a ride during which he threatened to arrest her if she didn’t have sex with him, reportedly saying, “[we] can go to the motel or you can go to jail.” In the motel room, he expressed his desire to anally penetrate her with his service weapon. He then did the deed, then drove her home after the rape.
He was convicted of rape as well as lesser charges of harassment and assault. However, recently, due to the gun-loving nature of the state of Georgia, the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles re-granted Krauss his right to carry a firearm. Think Progress reports:
According to a Journal-Constitution tally, he is one of 358 violent felons who regained these rights over a six year period. That includes 32 violent felons who killed someone, and 44 who committed sex crimes.
