“You can’t give a 9-year-old an Uzi and expect her to control it.” These words from Phoenix area firearms expert Ronald Scott to USA Today Network are very logical to many. Some parents apparently feel that they need to be training their children early in shooting guns, so they sign them up for shooting classes. However, an Uzi is a high-powered automatic weapon that take a lot of control to handle. Charles Vacca learned that lesson the hard way. As he instructed a 9-year-old girl how to spray an Uzi at the Last Stop outdoor shooting range in White Hills, Arizona, he lost his life when she lost control of it.

On Monday, when the little girl tried to fire the Uzi, it “lurched” over her head due to the heavy kickback, striking Vacca once. He was airlifted to University Medical Center in Las Vegas and pronounced dead later in the day.

Apparently, it is standard practice in shooting ranges for children eight years and older can receive instruction on how to shoot. The 9-year-old in question was at the range with her parents. Last Stop manager Sam Scarmardo says that nothing like that has ever happened at the range like that in its greater than ten years of operation. He said that “not even a scratch,” has been suffered there before.

It is unknown whether or not Last Stop will allow small children to use high powered weapons like the Uzi in the future, but Scamardo says “I just ask everybody to pray for Charlie, and pray for the client, she’s going to have a hard time.”
