A good number of people will tell you that they love sex. Folks look to get it in as much as possible, but there are a few drawbacks to having all the sex you may want to have. One is definitely STD’s that are out there that need to be avoided at all costs. The other would be unexpected/unwanted pregnancy. Though the birth of children is an amazing time in most people’s lives, it can be a dilemma to some. To avoid pregnancies, many measures are taken. The only options available to men at the moment (besides abstinence) are condoms or vasectomies. Thanks to the Parsemus Foundation, “a not-for profit organization focused on developing low-cost medical approaches, ” a new form of  birth control called Vasalgel has been developed for men.

Vasalgel is a derivation of  RISUG (reversible inhibition of sperm under guidance), a medical technology which has been in clinical trials for 15 years. Vasalgel is non-hormonal (unlike female birth control) and only requires one injection to work over a long period of time. Instead of snipping the vas deferens like in a vasectomy, Vasalgel is injected directly into the vas deferens and blocks any sperm trying to pass through. The procedure can be reversed with a second injection flushing the polymer out. The reversal can be done at any point.

Right now, Vasalgel is being tested on baboons. Three male baboons were given the birth control treatment and placed with 10-15 females each with whom they are “given unrestricted sexual access.” After six months of sexual activities, no pregnancies have been reported.  Inspired, new funding sources have come forward and the Parsemus Foundations plans to start testing on human next year. It is hoped that Vasalgel will be on the market in 2017 at “a price that is “less than the cost of a flat-screen television.”
