It’s been a long, hectic journey for Olympic star, Oscar Pistorius. He has been on trial for months after the Valentine’s Day killing of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius, a double amputee, claimed that he shot Steenkamp, an up and coming model and reality TV star, when he mistook her for an intruder in his South African home. He admittedly hit her with four shots from his gun. The prosecution feels that the shooting was the result of intense argument between the couple that was so loud neighbor could hear. However, Judge Thokozile Masipa, who is presiding over the case has suggested that the prosecution has not proven Pistorius, indeed, murdered Steenkamp. Pistorius may be cleared of all counts of murder and premeditated murder.

He cried as Masipa said that there were “just not enough facts” used in the prosecution’s case to uphold a murder conviction. She is reported as saying, “none of the witnesses had ever heard the accused cry or scream, let alone when he was anxious.” Masipa also announced that she deemed dark text messages between Pistorius and Steenkamp obsolete saying, “Normal relationships are dynamic and unpredictable most of the time, while human beings are fickle.”

Pistorius is breathing a little easier, but the Olympic athlete still isn’t completely out of the dark. The judge said, “Culpable homicide is a competent verdict.” “Culpable homicide” implies negligent killing. If a formal acquittal of murder happens, Pistorius could still be charged with culpable homicide which would mean years in prison. The official ruling should be coming soon.
