If you remember the movie How High, Silas (played by Method Man) grew specific weed strains and gave people what they needed according to the ailment. A few companies are working together to make an operation like Silas, but legal. An Israeli company will be teaming with American companies to produce strains of marijuana made specifically to treat specific health conditions.

New York based software development company joined forces with licensed grower, Search Ltd. to create the program, KanaboSeed “that will assist breeders in growing marijuana strains with precise attributes and effect.” According to High Times:

The goal of the program is to create “designer strains” with enhanced CBD  to THC ratios, in order to provide patients with optimal medicine, both with and without the high effect. Patients suffering from chronic pain often experience better results by medicating with strains higher in THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, while people with conditions ranging from epilepsy to heart disease sometimes prefer the non-intoxicating route associated with high-CBD variations. (THC [Tetrahydrocannabinol] and CBD [Cannabidiol] are active ingredients in marijuana).

The whole concept was derived from a concept developed by scientists at Hebrew University where “they produced strains of cherry tomatoes with a ripening inhibitor that gave the fruit a longer shelf life.” BreedIT CEO, Oded Sagee explained, “We believe that with our knowledge and background we will be able to develop new breeds that will be more effective.”

Will “designer weed” become the new thing? Marijuana made specifically for specific things may change the budding legal marijuana industry.
