Mail is something that all inmates look forward to. Letters from friends and loved ones are coveted materials behind bars, but they are heavily processed before making it to their intended recipient. Three inmates in the Broward County Jail in Florida devised a plan to get some mail intended for all the inmates. However, they are now facing serious charges because the mail was found to contain illegal drugs.
The three conspiring inmates, William Hahne, 56; Gregory Golden, 41; and Dean Aubol, 35, all face federal charges for trying to possess and distribute the drug 25I-NBOMe. They all have plead not guilty, but face 20 years in federal prison and a $1 million fine. The trio conspired to smuggle the synthetic designer drug into the jail by soaking letters on old-fashion ink blotter paper and mailing them to several inmates at the Joseph V. Conte jail in Pompano Beach. Hahne, a former chemical engineer for Broward County serving time for several drug charges, faces a state charge of introducing contraband into the jail.
According to the Broward Sheriff deputies, Hahne, “mailed three separate letters to an inmate at the Conte Facility. Inside those letters there was blotter papers [and] on the blotter paper there was a … narcotic, 25I-NBOMe.” Hahne was arrested in April for trafficking 251-NBOMe. It was thought that he was moving LSD at first.
Hahne’s lawyer, Glenn Kritzer said, “As his lawyer, I’m wondering why the federal government chose to charge him in this matter for the very same acts for which he is already charged by the state of Florida.”
