In celebration of Three Kings’ Day on January 6th, some people get Three Kings cake or bread (also known as Rosca de Reyes bread) to share with family and friends. At least 40 people in the Orange County area were hospitalized after eating Three Kings Day bread that was laced with a synthetic drug that circulated the area.
Nurses from various hospitals called Santa Ana police to report dozens of sick patients exhibiting symptoms such as nausea and hallucinations. Victims also suffered dizziness, palpitations, and numbness. They had eaten the cake on Monday and Tuesday to celebrate the holiday according to reports. As a result, authorities closed the shop called Cholula’s Bakery, which was the origin of the tainted fruit cake.
A synthetic drug was detected, but it is unclear which one was used. “There are hundreds of types of synthetic drugs,” said Cpl. Anthony Bertagna of the Santa Ana police department. “Hopefully they can isolate what exactly we’re talking about.”
According to NBC Los Angeles, Cholula’s Bakery will stay closed until meets this criteria: “professional restaurant-grade cleaning, disposal of all opened food and all ingredients used to make the Rosca de Reyes bread, and mandatory food safety training for all staff.”
Those who believe they may have eaten the cake are encouraged to call the Santa Ana Police Crimes Against Persons Unit at 714-245-8390.
