Craigslist is a great website to visit to see jobs that are available in your area as well as locally sell and/or shop for items that you may need. People also visit the Craigslist personals section to find some loving. Thousands of people use this feature to find a willing partner to have sex with. It’s very convenient for people tired of going through the traditional means of finding a partner. However, seemingly, quite a number of these hookups end in disaster. We’ve all heard about the psychos prowling Craigslist looking for victims to do horrible things to, but research has shown that Craigslist hookups have accounted for a rise in HIV infections in America.

Researchers at the University of Minnesota and New York University conducted a study titled “The Internet’s Dirty Secret” that analyzed Craigslist transactions. In the study, data was analyzed from 33 states from the years 1999 to 2008. Researchers found that the thousands of responses to Craigslist personal ads  account for a 15.9% increase in HIV infections after the site moves into a new U.S. market. The study found that 6,000 cases of HIV infections are linked to Craigslist every year. Furthermore, these transactions have generated $65.3 million in HIV related treatment costs annually.

“I actually think that the creators of Craigslist had no intent of harming society,” said researcher Jason Chan. “They came in with good intentions. At the same time, they did not anticipate that users could use the features in an unexpected way with unintended consequences.”

Be careful using Craigslist for hookups.
