Every driver in a location that has cold winters has had to let the car warm up before starting your trip to wherever you go. Sometimes, the car needs that time to perform to its best ability. However, in Kansas, this is against the law and law enforcement is starting to crack down on folks who warm their cars up.
Police in Roeland Park, specifically, have been stroking $125 tickets on cars that are warming up. They are patrolling neighborhoods, looking for cars that are running to hit them with a violation. One officer reported that he wrote nine tickets and doled out four warnings.
This measure is not seen as a way of punishing drivers. The ticketing of running cars is being marketed as a move by police to curb car thefts. In Johnson County, Kansas, there have been 38 cars stolen in the past month. Last winter, the county reported 60 vehicles stolen that were left running unattended.
“Your car can be stolen in a matter of seconds. During my recent enforcement I did stop, go up to the vehicle and look inside the car or open the door and a lot of times the owner of the car never came outside to contact me and say hey what are you doing around my car? That’s plenty of time for somebody to steal your vehicle,” said Officer John DeMoss.
The ticketing does not apply to cars with remote starts. Drivers are fine as long as there are no keys in the ignition. If there are keys in the ignition, whether drivers’ cars are locked or not, is illegal.
