Don’s Corner: Education

reginald06-21-2011

In the Don’s Corner, we previously discussed the vision of a don. Vision gives us something to aspire to, a goal to ascend to greatness upon. Even if it’s having a vision for your family,  it’s still a great thing. However,  to attain any vision,  we must first acquire something very important. Education.

In his legendary book,  “The Miseducation of the Negro”, Carter G. Woodson explained that we have two educations: one that we are given,  and one that we give ourself – and we often make our mark in this world with the education we give ourselves. The first education would be referring to the education we are given in schools. This would include things like basic math, science, and history. When most people think of education, these are the type of lessons that come to mind. The second education is the type of education that “street smarts” would fall under, things we learn along the journey of life. There are plenty of millionaires without a college degree. However, most of them have one thing in common.  They educated themsleves on something and capitalized on it. They didn’t depend on the traditional  school curriculum. They qualified  themselves  by learning  their trade by any means necessary.

Classroom Right 2

As men, we must understand that with everything we do, we are either learning or teaching,  teaching or learning. The question then becomes, what are we learning? Historically speaking,  the education system in this country has not taught  us to be leaders, it has trained us to be followers. It’s emphasis is on teaching us about history,  rather than emphasizing on how to make history.  So what are we to do? Teach ourselves! We are living in the Information Age. Nearly anything we want to know,  we can find it on the worldwide web or in a book. Anything we want to learn, from foreign languages to business principles,  the lessons are at the click of a button or a flip of a page.  So, as dons (or aspiring dons) there is no excuse for us to be ignorant in this day. We are leaders, but we must master something  to qualify  ourselves  for that  position.  Education is our passport to a better future, for ourselves  and our  people.  So let’s get it stamped and plant our own flag in the world. Why?  Because that’s what dons do! And this.  . .is our corner.

Police Using StingRay Device To Track Cell Phones

There has been a lot of talk in the news recently concerning the police and their right to search your cell phone for information. While police need warrants to tap or search your cell phone records in order not to infringe on your rights to privacy and free speech, they are still finding ways to track your phone. Using a device called the StingRay (a cell site simulator also known as KingFish), police can spy in on your phone remotely.

The StingRay is a International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) catcher. It’s a small, rectangular device that acts as a cell phone tower that intercepts cell phone signals. According to the Wikipedia page for the StingRay, it is produced by the Harris Corporation and was originally intended for use in military intelligence. Now, law enforcement agencies use them to intercept, texts, calls, emails and more from individuals’ cell phones.

In a weird twist, law enforcement agents must sign a nondisclosure agreement in order to purchase a StingRay. The FBI claims that if law enforcement outfits let it be known that the StingRay is being used, criminals and terrorists will be able to get around it. George Washington University privacy law expert Orin S. Kerr said, “It might be a totally legitimate business interest, or maybe they’re trying to keep people from realizing there are bigger privacy problems. What’s the secret that they’re trying to hide?”

There have been disputes about police departments asking town governments for permission to buy a StingRay for $500,000 and more with taxpayers’ money without expanding on any of the technicalities of the device’s use.

Cocaine Factory Discovered After Dealers Bought Blenders In Bulk

Drug dealers usually have to move in silence. They normally try to do everything they can to mask their operations as drug dealers, so that the police stay off their back. If they move in a loud manner and draw attention to themselves, the police will come knocking and a lot get sent away on hefty sentences. Two cocaine dealers in South Wales provide an example of someone making themselves hot when their “cocaine factory” was busted after they were seen buying blenders from a store in bulk.

Gavin Etchell, 33, and Thomas Davies, 29, went to a UK grocery store called Asda in order to buy the blenders. They weren’t buying them to mix up some smoothies. They were getting them to mix up cocaine. A total of 12 blenders were purchased for £7.99  a piece. Store staff noticed that neither of the men appeared to be a baker or cook of any type, and tipped police to their suspicious activity.

Police followed tips and ended up discovering Etchell and Davies’s headquarters where they mixed the cocaine and prepared it for the street. The officers described it as a “well-equipped” drug operation. In the South Wales home, police found four compressed bricks of cocaine valued at £300,000. In addition to the drugs, 5.8 kg of benzocaine, a cutting agent used to stretch cocaine out to increase profits.

Etchell and Davies admitted to conspiracy to supply cocaine at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court. Both men were sentenced to nearly 16 years for their operation. These guys got caught slipping. Just use this as a warning to not do things too far out of the ordinary when you’re trying to do dirt.

Judges Out Of The Job After Viewing Porn On Their Computers

No matter who you are, there are few employers who will allow you to watch porn on the job. Porn is generally categorized as “not safe for work” or “NSFW” for this reason. You can face serious repercussions for indulging in flesh flicks on the job. Three judges in England were recently removed from the bench and a fourth resigned after it was discovered that they were viewing porn on their office computers.

The Guardian presented the Judicial Conduct Investigations Office’s (JCIO) report of the judge’s “inexcusable misuse” of their IT accounts by watching porn:

“Three judges: district judge Timothy Bowles, immigration judge Warren Grant, and deputy district judge and recorder Peter Bullock have been removed from judicial office following an investigation into an allegation that they viewed pornographic material on judicial IT equipment in their offices,” a statement from the JCIO said.

“A fourth judge, recorder Andrew Maw, was also found to have viewed similar inappropriate material via his judicial IT account. The lord chancellor and the lord chief justice would likewise have removed Recorder Maw had he not resigned before the conclusion of the disciplinary process.”

It has been reported that the judges did not have any child porn on their computers and that the porn consumed was not shared between them. There is nothing illegal about watching porn, but it is considered extreme misconduct to do so at work for judges. The decision was made to terminate them because their morals were brought into question and that’s bad news for judges.

Meth Lab Found In Walmart

The use of crystal methamphetamine is a problem for many in this society. The high makes people energetic and lively, but meth causes people to tweak and has many negative effects. Recently, much to the dismay of employees and customers, a portable meth lab was found in a Walmart in Muncie, IN.

The meth lab was found in a backpack left in the Walmart bathroom. It contained the tools and ingredients needed to cook up a batch of meth using the “shake and bake” or “one pot” method. Walmart officials say they noticed a man walking around the store with a backpack earlier. The man had been seen in the store several times before, purchasing items related to the process of cooking meth.

The police were notified of the suspicious man and authorities were tailing the him the store. He went into the bathrooms located at the front of the Walmart with the backpack, but emerged from that bathroom without it. It was at this point that police looked inside the bag and saw the “Breaking Bad” kit inside of it.

Police say that the situation could have been much more dire because corrosive acid had eaten through the bottom of the backpack and dripped on to the floor. It is being reported that the ventilation in the Walmart bathroom sent the toxic fumes out of the store. The bathroom was shut down for hours so that it could be properly stripped of any hazardous materials. Police are still looking for the man responsible.

Bill Introduced To Federally Legalize Marijuana

Medical marijuana is legal in 23 states and the nation’s capitol of Washington, DC. While this is considered progress in the fight to end the prohibition of marijuana, there are still federal guidelines that prevent doctors from prescribing cannabis to patients and limits access to marijuana for those who need it in the places in this country where it is legal. A trio of senators have come forth with a bill that would reduce these federal guidelines and make the laws concerning weed and its distribution more clear..

The bill was introduced by a bipartisan team comprised of Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky along with Democrats Sen. Kristen Gillibrand of New York and Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey. California Democrat, Sen. Barabara Boxer recently joined them (her senior aide was arrested for marijuana possession). There has never been a bill of this kind set before the Senate.

The bill proposes a reclassification of marijuana for the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), a rethinking of interstate transport of certain kinds of medicines, access expansion for research and allowing banks to get involved in the medical marijuana industry.

The Marijuana Policy Project along with Americans for Safe Access and the Drug Policy Alliance joined together as a consultation body for the drafting of the bill. The intended name for the bill when it becomes a law is The Compassionate Access, Research, Expansion and Respect States (CARERS). This measure has been met with rousing approval from those who advocate for the legalization of marijuana.

Reverend Charged With Gun and Drug Possession

Every man is due his day in court, but if the allegations against Reverend Shaun Harrison prove to be true, he is certainly one of the wilder men of the cloth in our society. The 55-year-old reverend and former associate minister at the Charles Street African Methodist Episcopal Church and dean at English High School in Roxbury was already facing trial after allegedly shooting a teenage student at English High in the head execution style. The teen claimed to be selling marijuana for Harrison who promised him drugs and girls. This accusation led to an investigation of Harrison’s Roxbury home.

Investigators executed a search warrant on Harrison’s house and in basement safe, they found contraband including a little more than an ounce of cocaine and four plastic bags of marijuana. Law enforcement also found guns in the safe including a Ruger .380 and a Smith & Wesson with ammo for each. A spent shell casing from a .38 was also found. It is reported that in a previous search of the home, scales and drug paraphernalia were found along with a shotgun and a rifle.

Defense attorney Michelle Brennan described Reverend Harrison as a “pillar of the community” that has never had any problem with the law and has only tried to help people throughout his life. She also suggested that the contents of the safe don’t necessarily belong to Harrison because the building he lives in is occupied by 20 people.

Regardless, the evidence recovered in the search influenced the judge to tack on an additional $150,000 to Harrison’s bail that was already set at $250,000. Can a reverend really be this much of a live wire?

UVA Honor Student, Martese Johnson, Pummeled By Police On St. Patrick’s Day

It seems as though no matter where you are in life as a Black person in this society, you are more prone to be assaulted by the police than others. Some may feel as though young people like 20-year-old Martese Johnson would be in a more privileged position than folks like Eric Garner in Staten Island or Mike Brown in Ferguson. Johnson is a third year Italian and media studies major at the University of Virginia. The brutal beating that he received from law enforcement on St. Patrick’s Day proves that no Black people are exempt from police brutality.

Students caught video of the alcohol beverage control agents viciously slamming Martese Johnson on to the pavement outside of a Charlottesville, VA Irish Pub. The force gashed his head leaving a sizable wound. The arresting agents claim to have approached Johnson after he had been turned away from the bar. The report states that the honor student “was very agitated and belligerent” at the time of arrest. He was charged with obstruction of justice without force and public swearing or intoxication.

A group called “Concerned Black Students” refute the agents’ claims, saying that the attack, that required ten stitches to mend, was unprovoked and over the top. Around a thousand students gathered on UVA’s campus last night in solidarity with Martese Johnson to protest against police brutality. Students at Johnson’s alma mater, Kenwood Academy in Chicago are also demonstrating and distributing flyers with the hashtag “#JUSTICEFORMARTESE” on them.

Black Man Named Otis Byrd Found Hanged In Mississippi

In a haunting reminder of the Jim Crow South, a Black man, who has been missing since March 2nd, was found hanged in Claiborne County, Mississippi. Otis Byrd is the name of the man found. The FBI and Mississippi Bureau of Investigation are looking into the matter. Though authorities are saying that the possibility of suicide has not been ruled out, violence done against Byrd is the most prevalent assumption among people in the Black community.

Otis Byrd was last seen being dropped off at the Riverwalk Casino in Vicksburg by a friend on the 2nd. His family reported him missing to the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department six days later. The MBI received a missing person’s report from the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department on the 13th. Law enforcement reported finding what is believed to be his body (they have yet to identify the body) hanging about a half mile away from his last known residence on Thursday morning.  NAACP was the first to report Byrd’s disappearance and the organization has sent a request to the Department of Justice to get involved in the investigation.

Otis Byrd was not, necessarily, an angel. According to records from the Mississippi Department of Corrections, Byrd served over 25 years in prison for the February 1980 murder of Lucille Trim in Claiborne County. He reportedly robbed her of $101. He was convicted of capital murder in October of that year, but was granted parole in November 2006. Though the mainstream news outlets will use this to imply that Byrd had his fate coming, but no one deserves to be hanged. If it was done by angry White people, it was really a modern-day lynching.

Don’s Corner: Thug or Gangster

$

gangster_4

In the Don’s Corner we are all about taking things to the next level, climbing to the pinnacle of manhood. Therefore, it is imperative to clarify a couple of terms that we have gotten confused for years. There are a lot of casualties of this confusion as people have attempted to be one, by doing the actions of the other, totally confused.  So, let’s put things in perspective and liberate the new generation from these same mistakes. For dons worldwide, let’s clear up the misconceptions between a thug and a gangster.

THE THUG

The original Thugs were bands of traveling criminals in India who strangled and robbed travellers. These gangs committed murder following precise religious rites to honour Kali, the Hindu goddess of destruction. Ok, that is where the term originated,  but as always,  we took the term and gave it its own definition.  In our communities,  historically,  the thug is that crazy dude down for whatever. A madman, the one to be feared. A thug is the one who put in work for a gangster.  When a gangster barked,  it was the thug that did the biting for him.  Thugs usually had it rough growing up.  Loners, they usually found family in the neighborhood gangsters who could relate to their plight. Typically, a thug was that person that would do things others wouldn’t,  which is how they earned their rep of being a hellraiser. Thugs usually have no rhyme or reason to their antics; they just love to inflict the same pain they were given over the years. That can change, and often does, when they are recognized and recruited by a gangster. Simply speaking, thugs are gangsters-in-training – IF they can survive, adapt, and elevate their mindstate.

gotti

THE GANGSTER

The term gangster first came to light in America in the early part of the 20th century. It was used to refer to poor Irish and Italian immigrant street “gangs” who banded together to pursue their slice of the American pie. Gangsters were very organized and always had a goal of legitimacy. They took pride in their dress, and had a strict code of ethics. They often plotted strategic goals that wouldn’t materialize until the next generation of their bloodline. Gangsters often forged strategic alliances with those in power to help facilitate their various enterprises. Gangsters were visionaries willing to do anything to achieve their goals.

The Discussion

A lot of people today,  particularly the youth, have the titles confused.  They feel that if you bash someone’s head in, or if you shoot someone at the drop of a dime, then that makes you a gangster. Worse,  they feel that if you sell drugs,  or rap about committing crimes,  then that makes you a gangster.  Nothing could be further from the truth!  A real gangster wouldn’t even be associated with this madness.  All of that is thug behavior.  Apathy has no place in the life of a gangster. A thug’s number one tool is his apathy – just not caring about anything. Gangsters are meticulous planners that use violence as a final resort, and a means to an end. The most notorious gangster in American history is Carlo Gambino, Founder of the Gambino Crime Family,  which later grew to infamy on the exploits of thug /wannabe-gangster John Gotti. Carlo Gambino was nicknamed The Jackal because it was said he would order hits with a smile on his face. That is the movement of a gangster.  A silent check mate over a loud “king me!”, which brings me to why I say John Gotti wasn’t quite yet a gangster when he took the helm of the Gambino Crime Family.

Most gangsters matriculate into the position of a boss.  They climb the ranks from being a thug,  to a gangster,  to one day being a boss (hopefully.) Boss status is usually conferred on a person after he has proven himself worthy by his peers. This coronation by his peers is what gives him his power because he has deemed himself worthy of their respect by adhering to their rules,  unlike a thug,  who is typically uncontrollable. In Gotti’s case,  he wrested his position away prematurely  by killing his boss  – actions of a thug,  rather than a don.  Consequently,  his entire reign was characterized by thug moves (tough talk, senseless murders,  abuse of authority, flamboyant overtures,  and in-fighting) that eventually led to his demise.

Gotti’s story should be the personification of the difference between a Gangster and a Thug.  As Don’s, we should refer to it often so that we can learn from his mistakes. As dons we should learn from the mistakes of others because we can’t possibly live long enough to make them all ourselves.  So, to my dons,  recognize the difference between a Gangster and a Thug.  Most importantly,  let’s aspire to be better than both of them because we are DONS and this . . . is our corner.

Why DC Is Really The Place To Be For The Tree

$

As it stands, almost of the states in the national have legalized the production, sale and use of marijuana for medicinal purposes. States like Colorado, Washington, Oregon and Alaska have taken things a step further and legalized weed for recreational use. Included in that number is the city of Washington, DC. Colorado and Washington state both have gone on to establish regulated marijuana markets (similar to the alcohol market) and are enjoying a spike in tax revenues. This means that there is a commercial marijuana industry where people can buy or sell trees legally. The other recreational states plan to follow suit.

DC, however, is a different story. It was looking like council members were headed towards regulation after legalization, but Congress hated on the progress and passed a law prohibiting the council from allocating any funds to further marijuana regulation.

This leaves DC smokers in a weird spot. Finally, they are able to blow without having to worry about authorities. They are allowed to be in possession of two ounces of bud (other states allow folks to only have an ounce). DC residents are also free to grow six weed plants (only three can be budding). However, you are still not legally allowed to buy marijuana with money or trade anything for it.

It’s kind of beautiful from a smoker’s point of view. The only way to legally get tree in DC is to grow it yourself or find a benevolent grower with some extra weed he or she is willing to give you. DC residents are able to gift as much as ounce to someone else. There’s no other way to get weed.

Clearly, there will be some folks out of their selling their stash and the powers-that-be in DC will probably end up commercializing. However, if it were to happen a pure sense where everyone stuck to the rules, that scenario has the potential to be a weed smoker’s paradise. Free weed for everyone!
