A week ago, Kim Kardashian met with President Donald Trump to discuss prison reform. The meeting was met with much criticism from people who believed that Trump was giving a valuable opportunity to discuss prison reform with a reality TV star. However, now it seems that the meeting bore some fruit, as it has apparently led to one controversial prisoner’s freedom.

One of the topics that Kardashian spoke to Trump about was the case of Alice Marie Johnson. Johnson has been in prison for 21 years, following a conviction for non-violent drug offenses. She was sentenced to life in prison on charges of conspiracy to possess cocaine and attempted possession of cocaine. It was her first arrest. Though President Barack Obama was on a roll with getting non-violent drug offenders released from their prison sentences, Johnson’s case fell by the wayside.

Today, it was announced that (seemingly influenced by Kardashian) Trump will commute Johnson’s sentence, which is great news to the ears of all of the advocates that the imprisoned woman has amassed over the years.

This is Trump’s sixth commutation. Others have been more controversial decisions that Johnson’s. According to CNN:

Trump has pardoned Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio, former Vice President Dick Cheney’s chief of staff I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, the conservative author and filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza, and Kristian Saucier, a Navy sailor who pleaded guilty to an unauthorized possession of classified information who argued he was held to a different standard than Hillary Clinton.

Kardashian tweeted her excitement about Trump’s decision to commute Johnson’s sentence.

There is not a set release date for Alice Marie Johnson, but she is expected to be freed soon. To see more info about Johnson’s case, watch below.
