DC smokers, rejoice! As of now, for a time at least, the District has decriminalized marijuana possession. Now, if you are caught in the nation’s capitol with less than an ounce of trees, you will only be subject to a $25 fine. This is the latest in national marijuana reform that has been taking root.
However, the powers-that-be in Washington want residents to know that things aren’t completely sweet. There have been rumors swirling that weed is legal in DC, but it has been decriminalized, not legalized. District stoners need to be wary of the following while tokin’ up:
- If you refuse to provide your real name and address to police when being given a ticket, you can be arrested
- You can be arrested if you blow trees in public, have more than one ounce or sell any weed.
- Driving under the influence of weed is still considered a “dangerous crime” and will be prosecuted.
- UNDER FEDERAL LAW, FEDERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS MAY ARREST ANYONE IN THE DISTRICT FOR POSSESSION OF ANY AMOUNT OF WEED AT ANY TIME
Keep these in mind as you fire up you blunts, paper planes, bowls, bongs or vapes. DC may not be paradise like Colorado or Washington, but you’re still freer to blaze than years past where having a gram of the cheeba was a federal crime.
