Gynecologist Dr. Nikita Levy was found with his head shrink-wrapped and attached to a hose connected to a helium tank. This was to avoid criminal charges brought against him days earlier for more than 1,200 videos and 140 images of his patients on his PC. He illegally taped his gynecological procedures at the prestigious Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Levy was fired from Johns Hopkins after 25 years after a female co-worker noticed a inconspicuous pen camera that he wore around his neck in February 2013, which led to the federal investigation in which the tapes were discovered.
In a class-action lawsuit, a whopping award of $190 million was ruled in the preliminary settlement. This is one of the largest payouts for physician misconduct in history. Women claimed that the doctor inappropriately touched and verbally abused them, some claiming to be called into the office for unnecessary pelvic exams. Levy also violated protocol by asking chaperones to leave the office during examinations.
Though lawyers claimed that thousands of women were compromised by Dr. Levy since 1988 (he saw roughly 12,600 patients of which 8,000 were involved in the suit) , it is unclear which ones due to the fact that faces aren’t shown in the pictures. At least 62 have been identified. The host of patients also implies that the hospital knew something was amiss beforehand.
