It’s safe to say that although he broke Hank Aaron’s all-time home run record, former San Francisco Giant Barry Bonds will never have a bronze bust in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY due to his use of performance enhancing drugs. Bonds experienced one of the biggest falls from grace after this was discovered and he’s caught mad vitriol from baseball players, commentators and fans alike. However, he still has fans who want to see him immortalized for his accomplishments.

After his latest Hall of Fame “snubbing,” Native San Franciscan and lifelong Giants fan, Hayden Simmons and friends conjured up the idea  to start the “Barry Bronze” campaign on Kikcstarter to fund an 8-foot, bronze statue of the slugger. “We grew up watching Barry and he just provided us with so much entertainment,” Simmons said. “I can understand that he may not be the most popular person outside of the Bay Area, but for us he’s a legend.”

It is hoped that it will adorn the grounds of the Giants’ home field, AT&T Park, alongside the statues of Juan Marichal, Orlando Cepeda, Willie Mays and Willie McCovey. The campaign to raise $60,000 was launched on Thursday, Bonds’s birthday. The group has already found a sculptor, who for $67,000 “Kickstarted” commissioned to a Robocop statue in Detroit.Simmons said, “I mean, if Detroit can get one for Robocop, we should be able to get one for Barry.”

Simmons and company have vowed to return money to donors should they not meet their goal or find an acceptable spot for the statue. On the flip side, if the $60,000 goal is exceeded, the Barry Bronze squad has promised to make it even bigger than planned. Only time will tell.
