Anwar Glover, better known as “Slim Charles,” the towering, intimidating Barksdale crew muscle on HBO’s The Wire recently got into some drama in his native Northwest DC (known as “Uptown” locally). At nightclub Cafe Asia, Glover was in an altercation with two men who apparently started beating him. Glover, 41-years-old, said as the two assailants beat him, he heard someone yell that one of them had a knife. Shortly after, he felt a sharp pain in his gut as he fought back. He was treated at George Washington University Hospital and released.
Glover is no wallflower, in case you didn’t know. Also known as “Big G” or “Ghengis,” Glover co-founded popular DC go-go band, The Backyard Band as a teenager. Though extremely musical, the regional DC go-go scene isn’t sweet. Glover admitted in an interview once to being shot thirteen times over the years. Though, the “rough and tumble” Slim Charles character he started playing on The Wire doesn’t seem farfetched from his real life persona, he has done a lot to work with the youth of DC to help them find a better way. After the 2007 murder of his brother, Tayvon in the Columbia Heights area of the “Dirty District,” Glover appeared with Mayor Adrian Fenty to try to belt revenge shootings in the city.
Besides The Wire, Glover has made three appearances on HBO’s Treme and was most recently in the critically acclaimed, 12 Years A Slave in a minor role. He has been working on his own movie, Shoe Dog with The Wire contributor George Pelecanos.
In regards to his stabbing, Glover kept it G and posted to Instagram immediately assuring all those who may be concerned:
