Admission to an Ivy League institution is one of the more sought-after privileges in this society. To blow a chance at one of these universities would seem to be quite a pill to swallow. This would be the case of former University of Pennsylvania basketball player, Anthony “Tony” Bagtas. The 5’11″, freshman guard who stood out among Georgia prospects before enrolling at UPenn, now has now left school and is facing multiple criminal charges stemming from a string of robberies on campus last year. A total of 14 felony charges were handed down on June 9th for theft of laptops, cash and other items. Bagtas has also caught misdemeanor charges including theft, criminal trespassing and receiving stolen property.
Bagtas was initially charged in April for eight March burglaries, one from last September and one from January. All of these burglaries were reported at UPenn residence halls. According to coverage in UPenn’s Summer Pennsylvanian, the Division of Public Safety detailed that the newer charges are from heists pulled during the school’s 2013 Thanksgiving break, again, all in residence halls.
Bagtas was charged by an Indicting Grand Jury. He would normally have a simple preliminary hearing, but it is suspected that there was some witness intimidation, or there was a strong possibility for that to happen. A representative from the Philadelphia District Attorney’s office says that Bagtas has not been charged with witness intimidation, but he’s not in the clear for that.
Bagtas is scheduled to be formally arraigned today and is reportedly being held in a correctional institution. At the arraignment, he will be able to enter a plea.
