It’s well known that the city of Detroit is in turmoil. The city which has recently celebrated its 313th anniversary (the same number as the area code) has been in economic despair evidenced by filing for bankruptcy, a sprawling water crisis, closing schools and businesses and foreclosed homes. Apparently even historical landmarks aren’t immune from the poverty. The recreation center where the former legendary world heavyweight champion Joe Louis used to train is slated for demolition.
The Brewster Wheeler Recreation Center is slated for demolition. The center closed in the early 2000′s and has now been abandoned. Unless someone can devise a workable plan to save “The Brown Bomber’s” training home, it will be destroyed. Apparently, many of the venues where boxers have trained in Detroit are no longer standing. The Brewster Wheeler Recreation Center has been standing since 1929.
This is the “final nail in the coffin for boxing in Detroit” according to founder and president of the Michigan Boxing Hall of Fame, Dr. Stuart Kirschenbaum. It just kills me,” he said. “It’s almost sacrilegious to see that nothing was done to at least save something — a stairway, an entrance way.”
Hopefully, boxing enthusiasts are coming up with ways to save the historic landmark.
