There are two elements at play here. One is that middle school students are ruthless. Give them and inch and they’ll take a mile to tear down the object of their ire. The other element is that teachers are real people. Outside of the classroom, they live real lives and do things that normal people do. One of the normal things that people do these days is send selfies. Sometimes, these selfies are naked. These two elements showed themselves in the case of 34-year-old Lekeshia Jones who taught an after school business class for students at Myers Middle School in Savannah, Georgia. She has been fired from the school after students found nude selfies in her phone and released them.
One day, after class, Jones let her students borrow her cellphone to call their parents to pick them up. Naturally, the curious students went through her phone and discovered the nude pictures. Without their teacher knowing, other students captured the breeched photos with their own phones. The next day, a “T.H.O.T” (acronym for “that hoe over there”) Facebook page was created featuring the hacked photos. The photos went viral, creating a fervor in the hallways at Myers.
A female student notified Jones of her newfound infamy. Instead of going to the school’s administration, Jones decided to do some sleuthing for herself. She says she missed three weeks of school under doctor’s order. School officials claim she didn’t go missing until she was confronted about the situation. Jones was fired because student officials ruled that the nude selfies shouldn’t have been in the classroom. Jones has countered with a wrongful termination suit, claiming that the students had no right to steal the images used.
She also plans on bringing charges against the students who took snapped shots of the photos in her phone.
