The country is ready to explode, it seems. Though not as loud as before, people are still on the ground in Ferguson seeking justice for police shooting victim, Mike Brown and others brutalized by police (no charges have been levied against Ferguson police officer, Darren Wilson, yet). In Washington, President Obama and others are planning on how to handle ISIS for the beheading of American journalists overseas. However, one fight that has been going for years has just turned up. Today, fast food workers in 150 cities have decided to practice civil disobedience, demonstrating at various Burger Kings, MacDonald’s restaurants and other locations. They are demanding a raise in pay to $15 from their current, minimum wage pay of $7.25. Now, salary nets full-time workers a measly $15,000 per year. This is not enough to support themselves/families. The campaign is called “The Fight For $15.”
The plan has allegedly been in place for a while for fast food workers to engage in a display of non-violent civil disobedience. This method has proven successful in the past for mistreated people though out history. However, the exact tactic has been said to switch up every month or so since protests began in 2012. Before, fast food workers demonstrated by holding protests at MacDonald’s shareholders meetings. The protestors are backed by the Service Employees International Union and others financially.
Today fast food workers are crowding sidewalks in front of their respective employer, fighting for $15. The groups are very spirited and some have even been arrested.
“There’s a national movement going on made up of fast food workers organizing to lift wages so they can provide for their families with pride and dignity,” said President Obama. If the president’s words mean anything, though some states have raised their minimum wage, change should be coming.
