“You never plan on someone escaping and certainly someone of that notoriety, you would think that they would take special precautions to prevent this,” said Ian Friedman who represented Ohio school shooter, TJ Lane. Lane, along with two other men, climbed the fence of  the Allen Oakwood Correctional Institution in Lima, OH and escaped on Thursday evening. He is there serving three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole for shooting three of his schoolmates to death in the Chardon High School cafeteria in February of 2012.

Lane, 19, escaped on Thursday at around 7:40 PM with Clifford E. Opperud, 45, an inmate serving time for aggravated robbery and another man. The high school shooter has been a disciplinary problem at the prison, having been disciplined seven times in his 18 months in for infractions ranging from urinating in the hallway to giving himself a tattoo. For six hours, police scoured the area looking for Lane and his cohorts, urging residents to stay inside and lock their doors. Extra forces were brought in to patrol Lane’s victims’ homes. He was found about a hundred yards away from the prison outside a church. He was taken back in early this morning without resistance.

Seeing this and his other violations already, officials have some serious thinking to do about how to contain Lane and keep him under control for the rest of his life. In regards to the shooter turned fugitive, Warden Kevin Jones suggested, “He wasn’t in the maximum security facility. That is something we have to sit down and take a look at.”
