It goes down every month. People on government assistance programs get their free food stamps. While most use their food stamps for groceries, as is the intent for them, others sell theirs to other people looking for a deal. People usually sell theirs for half of their value. It’s all free money for the seller. However, this act is definitely illegal. Known as “benefits crime,” the U. S. Department of Agriculture reports that food stamp fraud totals about $750 million every year. Derron Chamberlain of Middletown, OH learned this lesson the hard way after trying to sell his girlfriend’s food stamp card on Facebook.
Police report that Chamberlain posted the food stamp card on Facebook for $100 with all of his real information on the post. Chamberlain was excited when an undercover officer called him to purchase the card. Maybe a little too excited. According to Brothers On Sports,“He kept calling back to the detectives to a point where they thought it was humorous how much he was calling back trying to make a deal happen,” said Middletown Police Lt. Scott Reeve. Arrangements were made for the police to buy the card from Chamberlain in a local park. When the deal went down, Chamberlain was arrested.
Reeve said, “He didn’t realize he had done anything wrong. Even when they brought him into the police department and talked to him he was still surprised to find out it was illegal for him to sell his girlfriend’s food stamp card.”
Think twice about posting your illegal activities on social media. Though it’s good for engaging with people, it is also a beneficial tool to law enforcement, making their jobs easier.
