A few weeks ago, Don Diva reported about Victor White III, the New Orleans man that allegedly shot himself in the back as he was handcuffed. This is apparently a trend, because something very similar happened in Savannah, GA. Charles Smith is the next Black man killed by police as this tumultuous summer winds down. It all started withe murder of Eric Garner by the NYPD and the wave of police brutality gained steam with the killing of Mike Brown, the teen killed by Ferguson police officer, Darren Wilson.
Late Thursday morning, Charles Smith was picked up by police on outstanding warrants in Savannah. While cuffed behind his back, Smith allegedly kicked out the back window of the police cruiser and maneuver his hands to his front. Police say that he appeared to suddenly be armed as he tried to escape. That’s when Officer David Jannot, a veteran with a decade of service under his belt, opened fire and killed the 29-year-old Smith. Police say the gun was discovered beneath his body.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigations is looking into the case of Charles Smith. “This information is based on the GBI’s preliminary investigation,” the agency said in a release. “The GBI will continue to thoroughly investigate this incident to determine exactly what occurred.”
