It may be refreshing to know that a police officer in America has been convicted for excessive force and more in light of recent events. Don’t get too excited. Sam Carter, an officer in Boulder County, CO was charged with killing an animal. After a week-long trial, he was four guilty on nine violations, including four felonies for killing a prize elk.
Prosecutors had accused Carter of killing the elk in a residential neighborhood on New Year’s Day in 2013. He did so without reporting he’d used his service weapon to kill the animal. He reported that the elk was injured and had to be put down. However, text messages show that he fully intended to kill the animal.
According to The Daily Camera:
He was convicted of attempting to influence a public official, a Class 4 felony; one count of forgery, a Class 5 felony; and two counts of tampering with evidence, a Class 6 felony.
He also was convicted on counts of first-degree official misconduct, illegal possession of a trophy elk with a Samson Law surcharge, conspiracy to commit illegal possession of wildlife, unlawful taking of a big game animal out of season and unlawful use of an electronic communication device to unlawfully take wildlife.
This happened in June, not too long before Eric Garner was killed by police in Staten Island, New York on camera. It is discouraging to see that the death of an animal is taken more seriously than the killing of a man.
