Two NYPD officers were shot Saturday afternoon, while sitting in their marked cop car uniformed on a Brooklyn street. Investigators believe the shooting took place at an attempt to avenge the death of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. Police Commissioner William Bratton commented on the shooting by saying “No warning, no provocation. They were quite simply assassinated, targeted for their uniform”. The two officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian were working overtime when they were shot clear in the head by gunman Ismaatyl Brinsley, 28. The gunman has several addresses located in areas such as, Georgia, Brooklyn and Maryland.
Bratton states that Ramos and Liu were sitting in their marked police car on the corner of Myrtle and Tompkins Ave when Brinsley “took a shooting stance on the passenger side and fired his weapon several times through the front passenger window, striking both officers in the head”. The details of the scene are horrific. One witness said “One was clenching his neck and the other was holding onto his collarbone. One cop stumbled out of the driver’s side and he leaned over to fall down. He was trying to catch himself. He was mostly on the floor and he was fading out”.
Moments after shooting the two police officers the gunman Brinsley turns the gun on himself and takes his own life. The gunman began to panic as cops closed in on him. Brinsley fled into a subway located south on Tompkins Ave where he then took his own life as police closed in on him. His criminal record dates back to 2006, when he was arrested for shoplifting, carry a concealed weapon such as a knife as stated by online records. In 2007 Brinsley was sent to jail in Delkab County, Ga., for criminal trespassing and in 2009 he was indicted in Ohio for robbery, but charges were later dismissed. In 2011 he was arrested in Georgia for tampering with evidence, reckless conduct, discharging his weapon and criminal property damage.
A law enforcement source told the Post “Officer Liu and Officer Ramos never had the opportunity to draw their weapons. They may never actually have even seen their assailant-their murder”. Police in Baltimore tried to reach out to the NYPD warning them that Brinsley was going to arrive in Brooklyn. Unfortunately the NYPD did not receive notice until 2:45pm, which is five minutes before the attack took place. “The tragedy here was that just as the warning was coming in, the murder was occurring”. Said Bratton.
Prior to the shooting Brinsley was already a fugitive accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend in the abdomen at her home around 5:45am in Baltimore. After conducting some research it comes to light that Brinstley’s Instagram page contained anti-police threats, which references back to the Brown and Garner case. “I’m putting wings on pigs today. Take 1 of ours… Let’s take 2 of theirs”. The alleged gunman posted to his Instagram page three hours prior to the shooting. He ended his post by stating “This may be my last post”. The Taurus semiautomatic handgun posted on his Instagram matched the gun found next to his body at the scene of the crime.
Since the ruling three weeks ago of not guilty regarding the Eric Gardner case against NYPD officers, attacks on police officers have been on the rise. A week ago from Saturday two lieutenants and four officers suffered minor injuries in a brawl with protesters on the Brooklyn Bridge. Police officers will definitely have their eyes open now in fear they may become a victim as a result of recent events. Bratton says that he knows this is just the beginning of what is about to come.
