Police Change Procedures In Wake of NYPD Shooting

The big story this weekend was the fatal, tragic shooting deaths of two unsuspecting NYPD police officers at the hands of a man outraged by the killings of Eric Garner at the hands of the NYPD and Mike Brown by Ferguson police officer, Darren Wilson. Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu were ambushed in Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon by 28-year-old Ismaaiyl Brinsley, a man who vowed to “put wings on pigs” on his Instagram account earlier. Brinsley drove to New York City from Baltimore where he had shot and injured his ex-girlfriend Shaneka Thompson with a gun purchased in Georgia.

Law enforcement outfits around the nation, now in fear, have distributed instructions on how to proceed and continue doing their jobs. The NYPD, for instance, has directed all officers to respond to radio calls with two cars “no matter what the opinion of the patrol supervisor.” Police are also urged to not make any arrests “unless absolutely necessary.” Officers have also been advised against making inflammatory statements on social media and also to wear their bulletproof vests at all times. In Newark, NJ, officers are being urged to never patrol alone and to also avoid looking for confrontations with people.

While some try to tie Brinsley’s killings with the Ferguson movement, there is no evidence that he was actively involved in any protests nor any of the activist groups heading the protests. However, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey urged protesters to “call for calm and not let this escalate any further.”
